Port Authority OKs Stewart as NYC's 'fourth airport'
The Hudson Valley's Stewart International Airport is on its way to becoming the fourth airport to officially serve New York City following a vote today by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to begin operating the former military base.
Located 55 miles north of New York City, Stewart is currently served by American Airlines, AirTran, JetBlue, Northwest and US Airways.
Although it's being called the "fourth airport," Port Authority Executive Director Anthony Shorris explained that it's not really expected to serve NYC itself:
"Residents who live north of New York City, in fast-growing Rockland, Orange, Northern New Jersey, even out to Connecticut, maybe parts of northern Westchester -- there’s about 11 million of our passengers today who live in that catch area. They wouldn’t all come to Stewart under the best of circumstances. But does that mean there’s a capacity and an opportunity for dramatic growth over the 300,000 passengers that are there now, potentially into the millions of passengers? Absolutely." The Port Authoeity's board approved $78.5 million for a 93-year lease, which still needs an OK from the New jersey legislature, according to the Associated Press.
