Not quite Washington's Federal Hall

federalhall.washingtonstone.JPG

Although President Bush was in New York this morning to deliver a speech in Federal Hall, it's worth noting that the Greek Revival-style Federal Hall standing today is not in fact the same Federal Hall where the nation's first president took the oath of office. (And it's worth noting that some say that technically, Washington wasn't the first president.)

federalhall.washington.JPGIt is the same location, just a new building.

Washington was inaugurated on the site April 30, 1789, but that building was demolished in 1812. The current building, which opened in 1842, was first used as the Customs House and later as the U. S. Sub-Treasury.

What you can see at Federal Hall these days are the bible President Washington used during the ceremony and the now-cracked stone he was standing on.
Federal Hall is located at 26 Wall St., map. Admision is free.

To see more images from inside, refer to Forgotten New York's pictures from Open House New York 2006, when the building reopened after nearly two years of renovations.

Earlier: Federal Hall closed for a year of rehabilitation
