Hotel Mela opens on 44th just off Times Square

Hotel Mela is New York City's first new hotel for 2007.
Located half a block off the heart of Times Square, Mela bills itself as an Italian-themed boutique hotel. The former office building now has 229 rooms on 17 floors, including six suites; (two of those are penthouses, four are one-bedroom suites.)
Rates start at $219.
Saju, a 3,000-square-foot Asian-fusion restaurant and bar will open off the lobby by late February or March, sales manager Tracy Cottle told NewYorkology on Thursday during a tour of the property.
Officially the hotel opened on Monday, but not all of the rooms are finished. There is a small fitness mostly complete, that when done, it will have flat-screen TVs, a pair of treadmills, eliptical machines, bikes and free weights. The building also has one conference room.
Wi-fi is free throughout the hotel, but a secure line costs $10.95 per day. Bath products are provided by H2O. The custom-built furniture is stylish and sturdy, mainly modern with some flourishes on the lamps, under the tables and in the wallpaper choice that aim for more of a home-feel rather than generic hotel. Not all the rooms have desks, and some rooms have only showers, while others have shower/tub combos.
Hotel Mela is located at 120 West 44th St., map, just a couple doors down from the construction at Vikram Chatwal's upcoming Lamb's Club Hotel.
Next up in the way of new hotels for NYC, Hotel 373 Fifth Avenue is accepting online reservations by phone for January 14, but online bookings start January 18, (with rooms starting at $199.)
Update: Cottle e-mailed NewYorkology on January 15 to say all rooms are now complete except for the penthouse suites.
