Cheap Manhattan hotel, must like shared bathroom
The New York Times this weekend profiled Hotel 17, a cheap, clean, centrally-located, storied building with celebrity clout. Woody Allen set his “Manhattan Murder Mystery” here, and apparently both Madonna and Jon Secada were one-time residents (though presumably not together.)
The main drawback is that you don't get your own bathroom. If you can live with that, doubles start at $99 (through March) but rise up to $200 later in the year.
Unfortunately the shared bathroom issue isn't mentioned on the hotel's reservations page or when booking through Orbitz, according to at least one commenter at TripAdvisor.com. Indeed if you click through to Orbitz, you'll find this bold assertion in the hotel's description: "Hotel 17 features all the amenities one would expect from a first class hotel."
Located on a melancholly little park near 2nd Avenue, it's just a short walk to the more inviting Union Square. Although the Times story inexplicably calls the neighborhood the Lower East Side, it's located at 225 East 17th St., map.
