Touring backstage, behind-the-scenes New York
Once a year, New York City is awash in behind-the-scenes tours for Open House New York, but a handful of other spots are open through the year for sporadic peaks behind the curtain. A few are free, but most require payment. Here are the regular tours offering access to places normally off-limits:
"Wicked" on Broadway - Behind the Emerald Curtain
Carnegie Hall
Metropolitan Opera Guild Backstage Tour
Lincoln Center
Jazz at Lincoln Center
Radio City Music Hall Stage Door Tour
Madison Square Garden All Access Tour
Yankee Stadium tours
Inside Statue of Liberty - monument pass required

Steinway Piano Factory
Brooklyn Brewery
Six Point Craft Ales
Other organizations conduct behind-the-scenes tours of different locations during the year, including the Municipal Art Society, New York Landmarks Conservancy, Hush Tours, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Open House New York, the Transit Museum, Hidden Harbor Tours, Brooklyn Heights House & Garden Tour, Historic Fort Greene House Tour, and the Historic Districts Council.
Update: This entry was updated in February 2008 with the link to the new ferry company providing the only access to Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
