Intrepid dredging complete, new tug attempt planned
A Navy-led project has finished removing 35,000 cubic yards of mud from under the USS Intrepid and another attempt will soon be made to pull her to New Jersey for two years of repairs befores she returns to Manhattan and reopens as the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, the Associated Press reports.
Although no precise date has been given for the move of the decommissioned aircraft carrier, December 8 was the date perviously mentioned by Intrepid officials for its extra-high tide that day.
During the first attempt on November 6, a team of tugboats managed to pull her only about 15 feet before her propellers jammed too deeply into the Hudson River mud. It remains clear if enough mud has been removed from around the propellers.
(The image at left was taken the morning the tugs were still trying to pull the Intrepid out of the mud. The place was lousy with Secret Service, including the one pictured, due to the politicos there for the ceremony.)
