Broadway kids starter kit: 'Beast' to 'Lion King'

Although Broadway continues to court the kiddie crowd with new shows such as "Mary Poppins," "Tarzan," and "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" joining the ranks of "The Lion King," "Beauty and the Beast" and "Wicked," the guidelines about how to behave and who to leave home are still baffling to many parents, the New York Times observes.

The advice:

Of the Disney shows, many parents of small children cite “Beauty and the Beast” as the logical starter, with “The Lion King” the next step.
The story also refers to "an unadvertised and rarely used lap ticket at some shows — which can cost from $25 to full price," which frankly sounds absurd (and painful) considering most Broadway theaters' seat-pitch is worse than what you'd find on a sold-out budget red eye.

The League of American Theaters and Producers told the Times children under 18 accounted for 9.6 of the Broadway audience last season, down from the peak of 11.6 percent in 2000-01.
