Whitney inks deal to build new museum at High Line
Stymied by its efforts to expand on the Upper East Side, the Whitney Museum of American Art has signed on to build a satellite museum downtown in the MeatPacking District, the Friends of the High Line confirmed today.
The museum will be located at the intersection of Gansevoort and Washington streets as part of the High Line project, a plan to turn a former elevated rail line into a park and cultural spur.
The new museum would be twice as big as the main Whitney, according to the New York Times. It would open five years for now if everything is approved.
But if Tom Wolfe had his way, that would never happen. He tells New York magazine: Everything possible should be done to keep the Whitney from expanding. I mean, we really don't need any more of that, unless they improve in taste. Earlier: Whitney's "all but decided" to scrap Renzo Piano plan
