The high cost of 'Utopia'

Woe to the casual theatergoer who stumbles into Part I of "The Coast of Utopia," the Tom Stoppard three-play series set to open on Broadway on Monday night. Part I, "Voyage," may not make complete sense unless you shell out more cash for parts two and three, and the reading list of Russian history, literature and philosophy will set you back even more.

There is indeed a suggested reading list handed out with the theater program, and the New York Times has chimed in with its pre-theater "required reading" as well. The Playgoer theater blog has calculated it would cost $337.70 to purchase all the specified editions at their listed prices.

That's on top of the $300 or so for a single ticket to all three parts of trilogy.
