Thanksgiving travelers pushed AirTrain to records
Both the AirTrain to JFK and AirTrain to Newark airport racked up their highest-ever ridership the day before Thanksgiving, amNewYork reports.
At Kennedy, 19,519 passengers used the AirTrain on Wednesday, up from the 11,000 daily average; 11,645 rode Newark's AirTrain the same day, also a record.
(The numbers are a little puzzling though, considering amNewYork's sister paper, Newsday, this time last year reported that JFK's AirTrain was attracting only 30,000 to 33,000 riders a day, which was still short of its 34,000 goal. Which ever's right, it's probably safe to assume AirTrain was crowded over the holiday.)
The JFK AirTrain has been in operation since December 2003. It provides free transfers between terminals, long-term parking and rental car lots. For $5, you can take it farther and connect to the New York City subway system or the Long Island RailRoad.
The Newark AirTrain, which opened in October 2001, connects its passengers for $5.50 to either New Jersey Transit or Amtrak, which both travel to Penn Station in Manhattan and other destinations. Connections within the airport and parking lots are free.
