Taxi fares rise at midnight; subway/bus fares stable
Today is the final day you can sit in a New York City taxi stuck in traffic for the low, low fare of 20 cents per minute. As of midnight, the stuck-in-traffic surcharge will rise to 40 cents, (and it will kick in when the vehicle is moving slower than 12 miles per hour as opposed to the current 6 mph.)
Midnight also marks the inauguration of the $45 flat-rate fare to JFK Airport from Manhattan. In the past, it was only good from the airport to Manhattan. You still have to pay tolls and tip, and there's still no flat rate for LaGuardia or Newark. Depending on traffic and your Manhattan destination, this may be a fare increase, or a savings.
The new traffic rates come into effect as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority budget confirms the agency has no plan to raise fares next year for subways, buses, Metro North or the Long Island Rail Road, according to the Daily News.
Earlier: Stuck-in-traffic taxi rates rise Nov. 30; and $45 to JFK
