Stolen Goya returned undamaged; NYC visit canceled

stolengoya.JPGThe FBI has recovered the 1778 Francisco Goya painting stolen outside a Howard Johnson hotel in rural Pennsylvania while en route to the Guggenheim Museum, the New York Times reports.

The undamaged painting, “Children With a Cart,” was recovered in Central New Jersey after an unnamed lawyer called the FBI to say where the painting could be found. Officials now say it probably wasn't an inside job and thieves were probably just looking for Nintendos.

Insured for only $1 million, the Goya will be returned to the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio rather than join up with the show that opened at the Guggenheim on Friday: "Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso: Time, Truth, and History."

“Basically, it’s a target-of-opportunity typical New Jersey cargo theft,” an FBI spokesman told the Times.
