Havel in residence and Plastic People of the Universe

plasticpeopleoftheuniverse.JPG

As part of the seven-week intellectual ecstasy fest associated with ex-Czech President Vaclav Havel's residency at Columbia University, the revolutionary Plastic People of the Universe played a free show at The Cutting Room on Saturday night.

Overheard at the bar before they took the stage: PPU is "the only band in history that ever changed the planet."

The band, like Havel, fought the good fight in Czechoslovakia after the Soviet tanks crushed the Prague Spring of 1968. The good guys eventually won, albeit 20 years later. And shockingly, it's now not far away from the 20 year anniversary of the nearly-bloodless Velvet Revolution of 1989.

Those events, along with Havel's plays and the politics since are all part of the Havel residency schedule that continues through December 15. PPU play again Monday at the Knitting Factory.
