City Council considers Staten Island Ferry fare
One of the city's best freebies, the Staten Island Ferry, may be headed for a fare increase, according to New York Magazine, which has found an Independent Budget Office study requested by the City Council.
The Staten Island Ferry has been free since 1997 when the 50-cent round-trip fee was eliminated. Creating a $1 fare wouldn't cover costs, but $2 would, according to the report. The Council also asked $3 to be considered.
Just this past weekend, the city increased the frequency of weekend ferry service to every half hour (from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.)
