OHNY Sunday: roof gardens and old cemeteries

octagon.woodstairs.jpg

octagon.stairs.jpg Open House New York continues today with more than 75 free events (listed below) that require no reservations.

A Rockefeller Center private roof garden, the lobby of the Chrysler Building and the old Williamsburgh Bank, the oldest cemeteries in the city and the top of the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Arch at Grand Army Plaza are among the spots with no-reservations, open-access today.

The former lunatic asylum the Octagon, (pictured above and left,) has recently been turned into condos, but its turning interior stairwell has been recreated. (Just make sure to bring two quarters if you plan to take Roosevelt Island's non-MTA bus to and from the skytram.)

marble.vault.jpgAlso of note is the New York City Marble Cemetery (pictured right and after the jump,) on Second Street between First and Second avenues, which only three years ago opened its doors to the public for the first time in 172 years. It's now open only twice a year, in fall for OHNY and again in Late April or May.
