Dia out of High Line, Whitney may step in - NYTimes
The Dia Art Foundation yesterday withdrew its plan to build a museum at The High Line park in the MeatPacking District, but the Whitney Museum of American Art may opt to use the space instead, the New York Times reports today in a story based in part on anonymous sources.
The downtown location could come into play for the Whitney if the museum's board votes to abandon its current Renzo Piano-design expansion plans for its Upper East Side location. That plan has faced opposition form neighbors and preservationists who oppose the loss of a brownstone building in the historic district.
The High Line project will turn an abandoned elevated rail tracks into a park and cultural center, with the first phase, from Gansevoort Street to 20th Street, set to open in spring 2008, according to the Times.
The potential museum space is located at 820 Washington Street, at Gansevoort, map.
