Condos displacing last Lower East Side kosher bakery

Gertel's Bakery, the last kosher bakery on the Lower East Side, is about to make way for condos.

Located at 53 Hester Street, map, Gertel's has been in business since 1914. Although an e-newsletter from the Lower East Side Tenement Museum warns that Gertel's will be closing next year, a call to the shop today elicited a clarification: "We're just moving."

No new location yet.

Resources: kosher food merchants of the LES

Update: Just to clarify, it was the Tenement Museum newsletter that called Gertel's "the neighborhood’s last kosher bakery."

Update: As it's shaking out, it's still unclear if Gertel's will actually close.

Earlier: Lower East Side now opposite of a bargain district
It looks official: 2nd Avenue Deli closed forever
