A Broadway roll in the hay for 'Young Frankenstein'

Mel Brooks' classic horror spoof "Young Frankenstein" is expected to hit Broadway a year from now - as a muscial.

Later this month, the show will get its first reading, with a pretty remarkable cast. First you get Brian D'Arcy James (of the "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" musical,) playing Dr. Frankenstein, Kristin Chenoweth ("Wicked" and "West Wing") as the doctor's fiancee, and Marc Kudisch, ("See What I Wanna See") as the police inspector. All three are also working together in the Roundabout Theatre revival of "The Apple Tree," which begins previews in late November.

But even better, Cloris Leachman will reprise her role from the 1974 movie to play Frau Blucher. Roger Bart, who played the original Carmen Ghia when Brooks' "The Producers" stormed Broadway, will take on Igor. Sutton Foster ("The Drowsy Chaperone" and "Thoroughly Modern Millie") gets Inga and Shuler Hensley ("Tarzan" and "Oklahoma!") will play the nameless monster.

You can't buy a ticket to the workshop, as it's meant only for prospective backers. If it all goes well, the show would open in Chicago in the summer and move to Broadway for fall 2007.

Casting details can be found in Playbill, BroadwayWorld and elsewhere, but they're all just quoting from the Post which strangely isn't making any of those stories available on the web just yet.

And now,as transcribed by IMDb, a key scene from the movie:

Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Igor, would you mind telling me whose brain I did put in?
Igor: And you won't be angry?
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: I will NOT be angry.
Igor: Abby someone.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Abby someone. Abby who?
Igor: Abby Normal.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Abby Normal?
Igor: I'm almost sure that was the name.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Are you saying that I put an abnormal brain into a seven and a half foot long, fifty-four inch wide GORILLA?
[shakes and grabs him]
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: IS THAT WHAT YOU'RE TELLING ME?
