New Thanksgiving Day Parade rules to cut wind threat

Last year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was marred when strong winds slammed a giant M&M’s helium balloon toward a Times Square lamppost, which broke off at the top and fell on two sisters in the crowd below.

A city task force has now determined at least one cause: the parade was "traveling in an area significantly narrower than Macy’s own guidelines allowed," according to the New York Times.

The report, issued Tuesday, calls for more wind measurements during the parade, more training for balloon handlers and more precise measurements of the parade route, including hazards such as lampposts.
