Broadway pre-fall blowout: Stoppard, Shaw and more
Broadway's fall schedule promises a number of musical revivals,("Chorus Line," "Les Miserables," and "Company") another '80s movie-inspired musical ("High Fidelity,") a three-part Top Stoppard marathon ("The Coast of Utopia,") as well as something old (George Bernard Shaw's "Heartbreak House,") and something new (Simon Mendes da Costa's "Losing Louie") in the play category.
Also on tap with high expectations will be Nathan Lane in a short-run of the dark comedy "Butley" and Julianne Moore making her Broadway debut in a new play by David Hare called "The Vertical Hour." For the kids, both "Mary Poppins" and "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! -- The Musical" open in October. Three shows will make the move to Broadway from Off-: "Grey Gardens," "The Little Dog Laughed" and "Spring Awakening." And finally, what could be a car-crash waiting to happen, or not, Twyla Tharp's Bob Dylan-inspired musical "The Times They Are A-Changin'" will start previews at the end of September.
