Airport and stuck-in-traffic taxi charges may change
Taxi rates could be modified later this year under a proposal that would double the sitting-in-traffic charge (to 40 cents a minute from 20 cents,) and create a $45 flat rate for a trip to JFK Airport from Manhattan.
The city already uses a $45 flat-rate for all rides from JFK to Manhattan, (plus tip and potential bridge or tunnel tolls.) Since the fare currently varies based on starting point and traffic, the $45 could sometimes become a savings. (LaGuardia Airport has no flat-rate policy.)
The higher idling charge would add about $1 to the typical taxi trip, according to the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission calculations. The last time taxi fees were changed was May 2004, when the TLC approved a 26 percent fare hike.
On Thursday the TLC discussed the fare proposal, mostly speaking in favor of the changes. They'll be discussed again at a public hearing October 25, and if approved, could take effect in December, according to The Sun.
Additionally, the TLC said taxis could be set up to start taking credit- and debit-card payments by the end of this year, the Daily News reports.
