Restoration of 'Little Liberty' at the Brooklyn Museum
The century-old 30-foot replica of the Statue of Liberty standing watch over the parking lot of the Brooklyn Museum now has her very own blog.
"Little Liberty," originally stood atop Liberty Warehouse at 43 W. 64th Street -- and like the original even allowed guests, until 1912, to climb up into the satue's head and look down at Columbus Circle.
Moved to the museum in 2002, for a couple years she was rusting and reclining on the lawn behind the parking lot, (picture, right) but more recently has been given her own perch behind the museum where she's just undergone extensive renovation.
The blog chronicles the restaration process and features a number of pictures, some video and even a cross-section of the original seventeen layers of paint -- ranging in shades of brown, green and metallic silver. In June, she was covered in a layer of white primer.
The museum website also lists details about other Statue of Liberty replicas while Forgotten NY has a page about "Little Liberty" in her original locale.
