Tribute Center to open near Ground Zero in August

The Tribute Center, which the New York Times
calls the first visitors' center for Ground Zero, will open its doors across the street from the former Trade Center site in August if all goes as planned.
Located next door to FDNY's Engine Company 10 and Ladder Company 10 in the former Liberty Deli space, the Tribute Center will not charge admission fees, although donations will be requested.
Plans call for an eight-foot-tall model of the towers, a photo mural of the view from the top of one of the towers, timeline panels of the Feb. 26, 1993 and Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, the names, pictures and mementos of those killed, missing person fliers, a damaged piece of steel and qutations about the towers and the attacks. The final gallery will let visitors leave their own messages, like was done all along the walls and gates surrounding the trade center site for several years after the attacks.
The $3.3 million center will cost about $2.5 million a year to operate. Part of the funds came from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which each gave $3 million, Jennifer Adams, the chief executive of the September 11th Families' Association, told the Times.
Currently the south and east fences around the Trade Center site have are afixed with signs detialing the timeline of events on September 11 as well as the history of the buildings and the names of everyone who died in the attacks. At the northeast corner of the site, St. Paul's Chapel has an extensive exhibit about the Sept. 11 rescue effort and how the church was exclusively used by rescue workers for a year after the attacks. Other permanent exhibits to September 11 can be found at the New York City Police Museum near Wall Street and the New York City Fire Museum in Soho. On 14th Street, there is the Ground Zero Museum Workshop operated by a photographer who worked at the site after the attacks. Later this summer, several of the city's museums will open 9/11-related exhibits to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the attacks. Among the scheduled exhibitions are "Fifth Anniversary of 9/11 Exhibition: Chelsea Jeans" at the New-York Historical Society and the "9/11 Exhibition" at the Brooklyn Museum.
The Tribute Center is located near the southeast corner of the WTC site at 120 Liberty St., map.
