Subway SmartCard readers scheduled for July start

New York City Transit last week started installing SmartCard readers at some subway stations to allow riders easier access through the turnstiles beginning next month, according to NY1.

The pilot program -- which is underwritten by CitiGroup and MasterCard -- will allow select Citibank MasterCard cardholders to hold their credit card near the Smartcard reader rather than swipe a MetroCard at the turnstile. The technology may actually allow the card to be read even if it's in your wallet in your pocket or purse.

Initially the readers will be found only in about 25 stations: all Lexington Avenue-line stations (the 4/5/6 trains) from 138th Street and Bowling Green, plus Jay Street-Borough Hall in Brooklyn, and 23rd St.-Ely Avenue in Queens, according to NY1.
