Schrager: design hotels are over, art hotels are in
"It's over for design hotels," Ian Schrager, the creator of design hotels, told London's Observer. "What once was the exception is now the rule. It doesn't interest me any more. I'm trying to change the game again."
The new game, he said, is the "art hotel."
From The Observer:
His latest hotel, the Gramercy Park, which opens in August in New York, shuns sleek fittings and monochrome decor in favour of a 'bohemian spirit' and 'organised chaos', with paintings propped up against walls and original works by Jean-Michel Basquiat next to pitchers of flowers. The Gramercy Park Hotel is scheduled to open August 8, with special reduced rates through September 4.
