Manitoga placed on endangered properties list

manitoga.jpgThe landscaped gardens of Manitoga, the home of Modernist designer Russel Wright, have been placed on the Cultural Landscape Foundation's bienniel list of endangered properties.

Located 50 miles north of Manhattan in Garrison, map, Manitoga/The Russel Wright Design Center and its 75 acres is open to the public - but is in need of funds to maintain the trails and protect the sapling hemlock from marauding deer, (which seem to be getting into all sorts of trouble these days.)

Wright, who was best known for his home and kitchenware deisgns, lived at Garrison until his death in 1976. There he designed the landscape, including four miles of paths through the woods, along creeks, boulders, fern and mountain laurel.

Manitoga is a National Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
