Lou Reed, Suzanne Vega play free concert at 7WTC

7wtcpens.gifLou Reed and Suzanne Vega will play a free concert today at noon as part of the grand opening ceremonies for 7 World Trade Center, the first major building replaced after the terror attacks of September 11, 2001.

The ceremony marking the opening of the office building will begin at 11:30, with the music running from noon to 2 p.m. The other scheduled downtown performers are Ollabelle, Pharaoh's Daughter, Brazilian Girls, Bill Ware Vibes, Citizen Cope, Ronan Tynan and PS 89 & PS 234 students. Each act will play a set lasting about 10 minutes, according to music blogger in-the-know Brooklyn Vegan.

The concert will be held in the small park in front of 7 WTC, located on the north side of Ground Zero at 250 Greenwich St.

The 47-story 7 World Trade Center building was felled the afternoon of September 11 as a result of a fire caused by debris from the attacks on the adjacent World Trade Center towers. The new, environmentally friendly tower is 741 feet tall with 42 tenant floors built on top of about 10 story's worth of a Consolidated Edison substation that supplies electrical service to Lower Manhattan.
