Fastest way to JFK still by taxi - Wall Street Journal

Testing the best route to the airport, the Wall Street Journal (paid subscription required,) sent five reporters to JFK's JetBlue terminal from its lower Manhattan office at 5:15 on a Friday afternoon. The standard yellow taxi beat the bus, a car service, the subway/AirTrain combination and even the fancy new 8-minute helicopter service.

The trip via cab took 66 minutes but cost $60 with tolls and tip.

From the Journal:

The subway was the cheapest option, costing only $7, and the trip took 70 minutes for second-place honors. We simply caught an A train at the World Trade Center subway station and rode it to Howard Beach, and then boarded the AirTrain to the terminal. One catch: Not all A trains stop at Howard Beach; you have to make sure you're on a Far Rockaway-bound train.
One tester used the OZOcar, which bills itself as the city's first car service to use hybrid vehicles. However, instead of a Prius, OZOcar sent a Lincoln -- and it arrived 16 minutes late. But the worst report may be for US Helicopter, which may be worth the price only if your flight is on American Airlines, where the helicopter pad is located at JFK.
Our helicopter tester booked a ride on US Helicopter, which this spring began selling $159 flights (before taxes and fees) to and from JFK airport from downtown Manhattan. The company says it hopes to launch similar services in Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities. Not even the feeling of self-importance that comes from zooming high above traffic jams made up for the fact that, door to door, it was actually slower than both the taxi and the subway in our test.
