Waterfront Museum to reopen in May or June

waterfrontmuseum.JPG

The Waterfront Museum and Showboat Barge in Red Hook, Brooklyn plans to reopen in May or June after completing fire safety, electrical, plumbing and other upgrades that will allow it U.S. Coast Guard "attraction vessel status," museum president David Sharps said today.

The museum is housed in Lehigh Valley Railroad Barge #79, built in 1914. Docked at the end of Conover Street (next to where Fairway Market will open in the coming months,) it is the only floating wooden covered barge of its kind restored and open to the public. Last summer it hosted circus acts and other cultural programs at its Pier 44 location, but has been closed since August for the construction projects, Sharps said.

Once the work is completed, the barge will reopen and be able to occasionally dock at other locations, including at Pier 63 for the Fourth of July, he said.
