Times Square TKTS booth moving to Marriott Marquis

tkts.moving.jpg

The TKTS booth on Times Square will decamp to a temporary location at the Marriott Marquis at least through the fall to make way for construction of a new ticket office, according to BroadwayWorld.com.

TKTS will start doing business at the new location May 1.

The Theatre Development Fund's TKTS booth for 32 years has sold discount tickets to Broadway, Off-Broadway, opera, dance and other performances. The Marriott Marquis is located on Times Square at 1535 Broadway, south of the current TKTS location, map.

The other TKTS booth is located at the South Street Seaport at Front and John streets, in the East River side of the building at 199 Water Street.

The move comes just as Broadway posted its highest grossing spring week ever by taking in $21.4 million last week, according to figures compiled by the League of American Theatres and Producers. While the gross is up 23 percent over a year ago, attendance is up only 13 percent, Crain's reports, pointing to the rising ticket prices as the culprit. From Crain's:
Some theatergoers even paid $301.25 to see “Doubt” last week, a price typically unheard of for a dramatic play. Top ticket prices also reached $300 at “Spamalot” and “Wicked.”
