Queen Mary 2 sets sail from Brooklyn

Flanked by tugboats, police boats and even fire boats spraying red, white and blue water, the Queen Mary 2 emerged from the Buttermilk Channel around 5:20 p.m. this evening, signalling the ship's initial transatlantic departure from Brooklyn's new cruise ship terminal.

Hundreds gathered along the edges of Red Hook, cheering, clapping and waving each time the massive ship blasted its horn. It set a course toward Staten Island -- dwarfing the ferries and even the Statue of Liberty in the distance -- before turning left toward the Verrazano Bridge and out to sea.
