Morgan to reopen April 29 in Renzo Piano redesign
New York Times architecture writer Nicolai Ouroussoff is much impressed with the Morgan Library and Museum, which will reopen to the public April 29 after an extensive renovation directed by Renzo Piano.
From the review: A sublime expression of the architect's preoccupation with light, the design transforms the world of robber barons and dust-coated scholars conjured by the old Morgan into a taut architectural composition bursting with civic hope.
His triumph at the site, where order is brought to a jumble of buildings collected over nearly a century, should temporarily allay complaints that New York's cultural institutions shrink from a high level of architectural innovation. The Morgan now has a new glass-and-steel entrance on Madison Avenue, a state-of-the-art 280-seat performance hall and almost twice as much exhibition space. The collection started as the private library of Pierpont Morgan and his collection filled with Old Masters and illuminated manuscripts.
The Morgan Library and Museum is located at 29 E. 36th St. at Madison Avenue, map.
