Johnny Rotten podcasts for Met Museum
God save the Met Museum. Not only is the esteemed institution leaning into the podcast revolution, but they're doing it with no less than Johnny Rotten.
That's right. The lead singer of The Sex Pistols, a band that only a few months ago gave the finger to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, is on board with the Metropolitan Museum of Art for its new exhibition "AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion."
Johnny Rotten has recorded a free 8-minute, angry podcast in which he's allowed to riff against the monarchy, quote Shakespeare and poetically read the lyrics to "God Save the Queen."
From the podcast:
Fashion. What is fashion? We'll I'll tell you what Sex Pistol fashion is. It's one of necessity. All these things that later became absolute prerequisites to the punk look were originally there in a haphazard, by chance way. I'll give you an example: the safety pin. That is there by necessity. I could not sew or darn my own clothes. Lack of money meant no new ones. What does one do when one's sleeve falls off one's jumper? One safety pins it up. That's what one does. And that became a punk statement. It sounds better when delivered in John Lydon's trademark British growl, which you can listen to free at the Met's web site.
The exhibition focuses on British fashion from 1976 to 2006. Co-sponsored by Burberry, it opens at the Met on May 3 and will run through September 4.
