Eos, MaxJet making biz- and first-class cheaper

The Wall Street Journal's Scott McCartney in his "Middle Seat" column (paid registration required,) today reports on his findings of his test runs on Eos and MaxJet service from New York to Stansted, England.

He calls MaxJet "economy business class" with fares in the $1,499 to $3,499 range. Eos is more like "economy first-class" with round-trip prices from $2,950 to $6,500. Possibly the best news is that their lower costs are encouraging rivals such as British Airways and Virgin to look at lower their business- and first-class fares as well.

The summary:

Pros
• Lower prices compared with business and first-class on Virgin and British Airways.
• Big, lie-flat beds on Eos.
Cons
• No seat-back entertainment system (only portable players).
• Uneven service at lounges.
