Bilbao food fest set for U.N. Delegates' Dining Room

Chefs and cuisine from Bilbao, Spain will be flown in for a special two-week festival starting May 8 at the Delegates' Dining Room of the United Nations, to be followed by other special festivals for Brazil and Korea.
The Delegates' Dining Room, which is open to the public for lunch every weekday, had been doing the festivals only about once a year. But they proved very popular and more countries signed on to sponsor the events (which cost upwards of $100,000,) according to Sue Irukulla, the director of operations for food service at the U.N., which is operated by Aramark.
But regardless of what it costs to put on, the price for a meal remains the same as always: $25 for the all-you-can-eat buffet. Desserts are included in the price, but all beverages cost extra.
"It's unbelievable. I've never learned as much faster," executive chef Daryl Schembeck said of the experience working with the foreign chefs and their special ingredients.
The Brazil festival will begin May 22 and the Korea festival starts June 5. In the fall, Greece is set for sometime in October and possibly Iceland in November, Irukulla told NewYorkology.
Reservations are always required at the Delegates' Dining Room and are easy to come by -- except during the special festivals when spaces fill up fast. To make a reservation, call (212) 963-7625. Remember to allow extra time to go through security with all the tourists in front of the U.N. and then another level of security to get the special badge you need to get access to the 4th floor dining room overlooking the East River. No jeans or sneakers allowed and men are expected to wear a jacket, though a tie is not required.
