Museum at Ground Zero may charge admission fee
With no government entity stepping up to cover the estimated $40 million annual operating costs for the museum at Ground Zero, entrance fees may be charged, according to the Daily News.
But a vist to the memorial itself would be free, according to the plans advanced by Gretchen Dykstra, head of the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation.
By comparison, admission to the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor, including the boat trip to the memorial is free and operated by the National Parks Service. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. doesn't charge admission, but New York's Museum of Jewish Heritage: A Living Memorial to the Holocaust charges $10 for adults. The Oklahoma City National Memorial charges $8 for adults while New York's Ground Zero Museum Workshop has a suggested admission of $15 that is "given to one of the six charities."
The Tribute Center, a project of the September 11th Widows and Victims' Families' Association, is scheduled to open across the street from the Ground Zero site later this spring, but admission policies haven't yet been announced.
Construction for the official memorial at Groud Zero began earlier this month.
