'05 was record year for Broadway, grossing $825 mln

With tourism numbers -- and ticket prices -- at an all time high, final 2005 numbers confirm that Broadway racked up its most successful year ever by grossing more than $825 million, according to NYC & Co., the city's official tourism organization.

Nearly 12 million Broadway tickets were sold for the 2004/05 season, a 5.7 percent increase over the prior year, and the highest number for any calendar year in 20 years, according to data supplied by the League of American Theatres and Producers. Foreign visitors made up 11 percent of the audience, reaching pre- 9/11 levels.
