Gondola tramway proposed for Governors Island

Hoping to inspire creative designs for the future of the nearly abandoned Governors Island, Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Wednesday unveiled a Santiago Calatrava-designed gondola tramway that could dramatically link the former military base to Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The gondola -- just like plans for an amusement park, casino, Shakespeare theater or luxury hotel complex for the 150-acre island located south of the Brooklyn Bridge -- is all just talk at this point.

Public tours of the island resume June 3.
