Freedom Tower opening delayed to end of 2011 - NYT
The 1,776-foot tall Freedom Tower at Ground Zero, originally scheduled for completion in 2008, will not be finished until the end of 2011, according to the New York Times, which today chronicles some of the Ground Zero reconstruction disputes.
Governor George Pataki, who hopes to run for president, is insisting on an April groundbreaking despite concerns about existing reconstruction plans and disputes with Larry Silverstein, the developer who controls the lease at the World Trade Center site.
The Times boils it down like this:
But many urban planners, downtown real estate executives and civic leaders contend that the $2.3 billion, 2.6 million square foot Freedom Tower is planned for the wrong place, too big and would be unlikely to attract tenants other than government agencies, though few are willing to say so publicly for fear of offending the governor.
