Delta, Port Authority, volunteers search for whippet
Despite the end to the official search for the prize-winning whippet lost at Kennedy Airport more than a week ago, employees of Delta Airlines and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey are continuing to assist volunteers looking for Vivi, according to letters posted online by the dog's breeder.
On Thursday, breeder Bo Bengtson posted an update on WhippetView.com, which read in part: After nine days of no sightings and tremendous help from the Port Authority, they cannot continue to designate an officer to help Paul, Jil or Honi search the airport. They will continue their regular frequent patrols and lookouts, and we will be able to accompany them, hopefully also search on foot in these highly restricted areas. On a positive note, Jil's Delta contact has promised to provide a car for us to use on the parts of the airport where they have access. I will find out more about this tomorrow.
Delta now insists that they are in fact looking for Vivi, probably in response to my statement yesterday. We have no further details about this, however. They have also promised to contribute $1000 to the reward if anyone finds her. Posting on Saturday at the American Whippet Club web site, Bengtson wrote:Although we will no longer be able to participate in the search, both the Port Authority and Delta Airlines will continue their searches, and the traps will be kept out, loaded and checked frequently for at least several more weeks. Their searches are not completely altruistic, since a loose dog at the airport constitutes a safety risk, but it also guarantees that the searches will continue to be taken seriously. And:The good news is that there are heated cargo buildings where Vivi could hide out and make a home for herself for as long as she likes. She is a good hunter and has caught and eaten wild game (rabbits, squirrels)in the past. ... Each hangar is as large as an average shopping center. Many are abandoned and dark. All are heated. And, each has hundreds, if not thousands, of hiding places for a dog. The 3-year old whippet called Vivi, formally registerd as Champion Bohem C'est La Vie, somehow got out of her cage while Delta employees were loading her onto a plane to take her home to California after she competed in the Westminster Kennel Club show held at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 13 and 14.
