Curing writer's block with Algonquin's 'writer's rate'
Writer's Block? The Algonquin wants to help.
The historic literary hotel -- home to the Round Table of the '20s and host to guests such as Dorothy Parker, E.B. White, James Thurber, John Updike, and William Faulkner -- offers a "writer's rate" to anyone claiming writer's block. The deal is a $20 discount on a classic room, when available, Sunday through Thursday.
The pitch: Writers seeking inspiration are encouraged to stay at the hotel, where they can soak up the literary vibes throughout, from the cozy, oak-paneled lobby to the old New York-style rooms. But there's a catch. Writers must "present proof of their writing prowess with a copy of their work, whether in progress or published." No word whether the hotel staff is allowed to snark off lines like "you call this writing?" and turn you away.
