Chinatown buses seized during January inspections

Operations of two Chinatown bus companies were temporarily halted, at least four buses were seized and another was towed away after its driver ran away during a surprise inspection of the vehicles last month, Downtown Express reports.

The no-frills-ever bus companies known for their incredibly cheap fares -- $10 to Philadelphia; $15 to Boston; or $20 to Washington D.C. -- were cited for "a variety of licensing and safety violations," one police officer told the Downtown Express.

The World Journal, a Chinese language daily, said more than 50 summonses were given to 15 buses, owned by a number of companies.

Related: Bus ticketing site IvyMedia.com changed its name and URL to GotoBus.com.

Update: The Gridskipper travel blog notes that GotoBus.com's offerings include a possibly safer trip to Philadephia from Penn Station on the P2P Circulator, "a nonstop bus route between NYC and Philly that goes for $15 one way, $25 round trip."
