Plans advance for new Yankees and Shea stadiums
Redevelopment plans for two new New York City baseball stadiums were approved today by the board of directors of the Empire State Development Corporation, bringing the Yankees and Mets a step closer to breaking ground, NY1 reports.
The new Yankee Stadium, which would be sited next to the team's current Bronx home, would displace park land -- an issue that's caused community protests.
The new home for the Mets would be located next to the current Shea Stadium in Queens.
Both hope to begin construction this year and open in time for the 2009 season.
