Broadway ends 2005 with highest grossing week ever

The week following the New York City transit strike proved to be the highest grossing week ever for Broadway, Playbill reported today.

The 28 Broadway shows took in $25.2 million for the week ending January 1, 14 percent higher than the same period a year earlier, according to figures from the League of American Theatres and Producers.

Theater capacity was at 93.9 percent, the second highest in Broadway history, with nine shows at 100 percent capacity or more, including standing room tickets. Discounts were also in short supply, according to the full list of Broadway grosses for the week of Dec. 26 to Jan. 1; the average ticket price was $84.55, compared with $68.86 for the rest of 2005.

Update: The New York Times weighs in with the numbers, couching the record, saying it "may be Broadway's biggest week ever, though some productions played nine performances rather than the traditional eight."
