Transit service slows as contract deadline nears

With the threat of a New York City transit strike looming one week from today, some suspect the bus and subway operators are already slowing down service to express displeasure with the pace of contract negotiations, according to the Daily News and New York Times.

Although it's hard to prove -- especially given all the subway service disruptions in the past year -- there were reports of slow serice, bus maintenance workers refusing to clear a suspiciously high number of buses for the streets in Brooklyn and a full hour delay on the N and W line after a train was taken out of service "after its emergency brakes were applied repeatedly."

The transit workers' contract is set to expire Dec. 15.
