Strike watch: the taxi confusion zone

Amid reports of price gouging by some taxi and livery cab drivers taking advantage of the transit strike, at least one cabbie thinks some of the problems may just be riders unaware of the new "zone" fare system.

"(Y)esterday I found most of my passengers had no idea about the rate changes, so I found myself explaining it to them over and over again," taxi driver and blogger New York Hack writes.

The zone system even has some drivers confused, she writes, including over whether a child in a taxi should be charged the full fare.

Before the MTA subway and bus drivers walked off the job earlier this week, the director of the Taxi Workers Alliance advised her drivers to stay home during the strike because drivers charging the wrong fare under the zone plan ultimately could lose their operating licenses.
