MoMA to show hundreds of Pixar concept drawings
"Pixar: 20 Years of Animation," a compelling and dynamic show opening tomorrow at the Museum of Modern Art, features 500 concept drawings, sketches, paintings and sculptures never before seen outside the studio.
Edna Mode, the squat costume designer from "The Incredibles" is seen at MoMA in many incarnations, from a tall, dishrag-toting, pedal-pusher wearing Wilma-Flinstone type to the super-sophisticated Edith Head. You see where she lives and inhabit her stylish world, or rather the world the animators lived in while working on the film.
The pictures -- in pencil, marker, ink, charcoal, gouache, acrylic, cast urethene resin and collage -- have titles such as "Study of Underground Light and Forms" (for "A Bug's Life,") "Background Monster Textures and Colors," (for "Monsters Inc.,") "Sharks" (for "Finding Nemo,") "Miscellaneous Superhero," (for "The Incredibles,") and "The Storyboard Process as Told in Storyboards." They're sure to impress kids as well as adults interested in the creation process.
"Everybody just assumes the computer does a lot more than it really does at Pixar," John Lasseter, the executive vice president of Pixar's creative department, told the media gathered at the exhibition's preview this afternoon.
On the wall near the beginning of the exhibit there is a quotation from Lasseter: "The art challenges the technology and the technology inspires the art."
Pixar, a name derived by blending pixel and art, has released only six full-feature animated films since the company was created in 1986. They're all represented in the exhibition, along with a number of shorts and drawings from the June 2006 "Cars" movie.
The Pixar exhibit runs at MoMA until Feb. 6 and will later travel internationally. MoMA is located at 11 W. 53rd St., map.
