Sotheby's to auction NYPL's Stuarts, and then some

georgewashington.standing.jpgThe New York Public Library on Nov. 30 will place many of its works of art up for auction at Sotheby's in hopes of raising millions of dollars to build up its book collections.

Among the treasures up for auction are a number of Gilbert Stuart paintings, including two of President Washington.

Earlier his year, the NYPL sold its Asher B. Durand's "Kindred Spirits" to a Wal-Mart heiress, much to the dismay of art lovers who hoped the library's collection would remain in New York City.

The full auction collection will be on exhibit beginning Nov. 26 at Sotheby's, located at 1334 York Ave. at 72nd Street, map.
