Seven NYC hotels awarded Michelin 5-star rating

The new Michelin 2006 guide to New York City restaurants and hotels arrived in bookstores today. Not surprisingly, all 50 hotels it lists are in Manhattan.

But what is a bit of a surprise is that a dozen of the hotels have rooms starting under $200 per night. They are:

The Inn on 23rd
Wall Street Inn
Best Western Seaport Inn
The Gershwin
Washington Square
Casablanca
Metro
The Shoreham
Cosmopolitan
Bentley
Wales
Excelsior

The hotels get one to five stars based on comfort; on top of that, some are "more pleasant"* than others.

The top of the Michelin hotel list:

Ritz Carlton Battery Park *
Four Seasons *
The St. Regis *
Essex House
The Peninsula *
Ritz Carlton New York *
Mandarin Oriental *

Michelin's 4-star hotels:

Waldorf-Astoria
New York Palace
Algonquin
Le Parker Meridien
Sofitel
The Warwick
The Carlyle *
The Lowell *
The Pierre *
The Regency
Trump International Hotel & Tower
