'Martha! The Unauthorized Musical' eyes Broadway

marthathemusical.jpg"Martha! the Unauthorized Musical" earlier this month had its first full reading in hopes of enticing investors to finance a topiary-adorned path to Broadway, or at least Off-Broadway.

The musical, a sharp yet adoring tribute to the at least temporarily dethroned queen of good housekeeping, had its first reading earlier this year - before the second half of the show was written.

The new second half includes references to Implode, (a company that might be confused with ImClone, the biopharmaceutical company that was the undoing of real-life domestic goddess Martha Stewart,) as well as the toe-tapping "I'm Not Sure What She's Guilty of, But I Know She's Guilty Polka."

John G. Ekizian, the lyricist and co-librettist for "Martha!," said the ending could get changed, to account for events that have taken place since the sentencing, which is where the musical currently concludes.

Ekizian and James-Allen Ford, the composer and co-librettist, have been talking to theatre companies and potential investors since the two-night reading earlier this month, but no other readings are yet planned, Ekizian said.

To hear four of the songs, including the "Martha!" theme, check the musical's web site.
